No more scooters from Bajaj

Bajaj Auto, whose name has been synonymous with scooters in India for decades, will stop producing the vehicle in the next three months. The company sells 300 automatic scooters every month under the brand name, Kristal.

The move is part of Bajaj’s new strategy to overtake Honda and become the number one motorcycle manufacturer in the world. It is the second-largest two-wheeler manufacturer in India.

The company also plans to drop the brand “Bajaj” from its three-wheelers in a phased manner and call it just RE (which stands for rear engine). Brand Bajaj would be restricted to only motorcycles.
Interestingly, early this year Bajaj had announced plans to launch a series of scooters to take on Honda, the segment market leader.

“Currently we manufacture the Kristal, our only automatic scooter, in small numbers. It doesn’t make sense to keep production lines running for such low volume models. Production of the Kristal will be stopped by the end of this financial year,” said Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director of Bajaj Auto, at the launch of Pulsar 135 LS motorcycle today. Giving reasons for withdrawing from scooters, he added: “In order to become a motorcycle specialist and number one in the world, we have to make a sacrifice, of manufacturing both motorcycles and scooters.”

The decision to move away from scooters, according to Bajaj, is pegged on three reasons. One, the company is seeing good profitability in selling strong brands like Pulsar and Discover 100cc motorcycles.

“Our EBITDA margin for the second quarter of this year stands at 22 per cent, which is the highest in the auto industry so far. For the third quarter we hope to do better.” Vaishali Jajoo, analyst at Angel Broking, said margins derived from selling Pulsars were above industry average, at 15 per cent.

Secondly, he thinks the worldwide motorcycle market is growing faster than scooters. “There is enough headroom for growth both in the domestic and the export markets. Currently we manufacture around 50,000 units of Boxers in China, which are sold in the export market.” The Boxer is sold as Platina in India.

Lastly, address the top end with KTM motorcycles. The company has a 31.72 per cent stake in Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM, which manufactures motorcycles of 250cc configuration.

“So, we make more money by being focused as motorcycle specialists rather than producing everything and making no money at all like the Chinese manufacturers,” Bajaj added.

Giving reasons for withdrawing the Bajaj brand name from its three-wheelers, Rajiv Bajaj said, “Companies with sharper focus generate more profits. We are adopting the strategy of Toyota, which has separated the passenger vehicle branding from its commercial trucks called Hino.”

The company is putting in all of its resources towards becoming the number one motorcycle manufacturer in the world. Currently it is the top exporter of motorcycles in the country with production facilities in India and China. Every year around 30 million motorcycles are sold. Honda of Japan sells around 7 million units worldwide. This figure includes Hero Honda’s sales in the domestic market, too. Bajaj Auto, which sold around 2 million units last year (and has a manufacturing capacity of 3 million) hopes to ride on the recent success of its Discover 100cc and Pulsar 135cc to double its output.

However, analysts say that to overtake Honda might be difficult as its India operations through Hero Honda are also growing equally fast and, therefore, reducing the gap and overtaking them could be challenging.

In the 1960s, Bajaj Auto got a manufacturing license from Italy’s Piaggio and began manufacturing and selling scooters under the brand name Vespa. In the seventies, when Piaggio refused to renew its license, Bajaj began manufacturing under its own brand, like the Bajaj Chetak, which was an instant success and even witnessed black marketeering with consumers ready to pay a hefty premium to own one.

But with the market moving towards motorcycles, Bajaj stopped production of its bestselling brands like Chetak and Super in 2006 amid plummeting sales. It again entered into scooters, but tentatively, in 2007 by launching the Kristal.

By fiscal year 2008-09, Honda became the largest scooter maker, selling 654,319 vehicles in a year followed by TVS, which sold 240,000 units and Bajaj Auto, 10,000 units (about 900-1,000 a month). The number declined over the months and reached 250 in November this year.

Ferrari

Ferrari S.p.A. is an Italian sports car manufacturer based in Maranello, Italy. Founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1929 as Scuderia Ferrari, the company sponsored drivers and manufactured race cars before moving into production of street-legal vehicles in 1947 as Ferrari S.p.A.. Throughout its history, the company has been noted for its continued participation in racing, especially in Formula One, where it has enjoyed great success.

Enzo Ferrari never intended to produce road cars when he had formed Scuderia Ferrari (literally "Ferrari Stable", and usually used to mean "Team Ferrari", it is correctly pronounced "skoo deh REE ah") in 1929 as a sponsor for amateur drivers headquartered in Modena. Ferrari prepared and successfully raced various drivers in Alfa Romeo cars until 1938, when he was hired by Alfa Romeo to head their motor racing department.

In 1949, Luigi Chinetti drove a 166 M to Ferrari's first win in motorsports, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ferrari went on to dominate the early years of the World Sportscar Championship which was created in 1953, winning the title seven out of its first nine years.
When the championship format changed in 1962, Ferrari earned titles in at least one class each year through to 1965 and then again in 1967.) Ferrari would win one final title, the 1972 World Championship of Makes before Enzo decided to leave sports car racing after 1973 and allow Scuderia Ferrari to concentrate solely on Formula One.
During Ferrari's seasons of the World Sportscars Championship, they also gained more wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with the factory team earning their first in 1954. Another win would come in 1958, followed by five consecutive wins from 1960 to 1964. Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team (NART) would take Ferrari's final victory at Le Mans in 1965.
Although Scuderia Ferrari no longer participated in sports cars after 1973, they have occasionally built various successful sports cars for privateers. These include the BB 512 LM in the 1970s, the 333 SP which won the IMSA GT Championship in the 1990s, and currently the F430 GT2 and GT3 which are currently winning championships in their respective classes.

AUDI AG (Xetra: NSU) is a German company which produces cars under the Audi brand, pronounced /ˈaʊdi/. It is part of the Volkswagen Group. The name Audi is based on a Latin translation of the surname of the founder August Horch, itself the German word for “listen!"

Birth of the company and its name

Audi Type E
The company traces its origins back to 1899 and August Horch. The first Horch automobile was produced in 1901 in Zwickau.[3] In 1909, Horch was forced out of the company he had founded.[3] He then started a new company in Zwickau and continued using the Horch brand[4]
His former partners sued him for trademark infringement and a German court determined that the Horch brand belonged to his former company.[3] August Horch was barred from using his own family name in his new car business, so he called a meeting at the apartment of Franz Fikentscher to come up with a new name for his company. During this meeting Franz's son was quietly studying Latin in a corner of the room. Several times he looked like he was on the verge of saying something but would just swallow his words and continue working, until he finally blurted out, "Father – audiatur et altera pars... wouldn't it be a good idea to call it audi instead of horch?". "Horch!" in German means "Hark!" or "hear", which is "Audi" in Latin (compare audible). The idea was enthusiastically accepted by everyone attending the meeting.[5] It is sometimes incorrectly said that AUDI is a acronym which stands for "Auto Union Deutschland Ingolstadt", but this is merely a clever backronym and not the true origin of the company name.

Logos

The Audi emblem is four overlapping rings that represent the four marques of Auto Union. The Audi emblem symbolizes the amalgamation of Audi with DKW, Horch and Wanderer: the first ring represents Audi, the second represents DKW, third is Horch, and the fourth and last ring Wanderer.[22][23] Its similarity to the Olympic rings caused the International Olympic Committee to sue Audi in Rochester, MN small claims Court in 1995.[24]
As part of Audi's centennial celebration in 2009, the company updated the logo, changing the font to left-aligned Audi Type, and altering the shading for the overlapping rings.[25]

Slogans

Audi's corporate tagline is Vorsprung durch Technik, meaning "Progress through Technology".[26] The German-language tagline is used in many European countries, including the United Kingdom, and in other markets, such as Latin America, Oceania and parts of Asia including Japan. A few years ago, the North American tagline was "Innovation through technology", but in Canada the German tagline Vorsprung durch Technik was used in advertising. More recently, however, Audi has updated the tagline to "Truth in Engineering" in the U.S.

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz is a German manufacturer of luxury automobiles, buses, coaches, and trucks. It is currently a division of the parent company, Daimler AG (formerly DaimlerChrysler AG), after previously being owned by Daimler-Benz. Mercedes-Benz has its origins in Karl Benz's creation of the first petrol-powered motorcycle in January 1886, and by Gottlieb Daimler and engineer Wilhelm Maybach's conversion of a 1873 Bollée steam-engine automobile by the addition of a petrol engine the same year. The Mercedes automobile was first marketed in 1901 by Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft. The first Mercedes-Benz brand name vehicles were produced in 1926, following the merger of Karl Benz's and Gottlieb Daimler's companies into the Daimler-Benz company. Mercedes-Benz has introduced many technological and safety innovations that have become common in other vehicles several years later.

Formula 1

In Formula One, the company part-owns Team McLaren, and has supplied the team with engines engineered by Ilmor[10] since 1995. This partnership has brought success, including Drivers Championships for Mika Häkkinen in 1998 and 1999, and for Lewis Hamilton in 2008, as well as a Constructors Championship in 1998. The collaboration with McLaren has been extended into the production of roadgoing cars such as the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.
In 2009, Ross Brawn's newly conceived Formula One team, Brawn GP used Mercedes engines to help win the Constructor's Championship, and Jenson Button to become champion in the F1 Drivers' Championship. It also sold back its 40% stake in McLaren to the McLaren Group and now owns 70% of the Brawn GP team jointly with an Abu Dubai based investment consortium. Brawn GP will be renamed Mercedes Grand Prix in 2010.
