Pageant Controversies

The Miss World pageant has been the target of many controversies since its inception.
  • In 1970, feminist protesters threw flour bombs during the live event at London's Royal Albert Hall, momentarily scaring the host, Bob Hope.

  • In 1973, Marjorie Wallace, the first American to win the title was forced to relinquish the title 104 days into her reign. Pageant officials stated that Ms. Wallace "had failed to fulfill the basic requirements of the job." The responsibilities and duties not the title have been offered to the 1st runner-up and was turned down by Evangeline Pascual of the Philippines.

  • The 1974 winner Helen Morgan representing the United Kingdom was forced to resign four days later after it was discovered she was a single mother.
  • In 1976, several countries went on a boycott, because the pageant included both a Caucasian and African representative for South Africa.[26] In yet another shut-out for the nation for its apartheid policy, South Africa competed for the last time in 1977, before it was welcomed back in 1991 as that policy disintegrated.
  • The 1980 winner Gabriella Brum of Germany resigned one day after winning, initially claiming her boyfriend disapproved. A few days later it emerged that she had been forced to resign after it was discovered that she posed naked for a magazine.[28]
  • In 1996, wide-scale protests took place in Bangalore, India over the hosting of the beauty contest. The swimsuit shootings were moved to Seychelles, and heavy security was placed. Despite the chaos, the pageant's live telecast went on smoothly.
  • Just days after her 1998 crowning, Israel's Linor Abargil revealed that she had been raped only two months before the pageant. The man accused of raping her was later convicted.

Hero Honda to sponsor 2010 CWG

With 296 days to go, there is optimism all around for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. This confidence was given another boost on Friday when Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Games, announced Hero Honda Motors Limited as the sponsor of India’s showpiece sporting event. The company will also sponsor the national leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay.

Talking about the government money and funds being poured in to ensure the success of the Games, Kalmadi said, “The money given to the Organising Committee has been taken on loan and we will repay it.”
The OC has been provided Rs 1,600 crore by the government.

Kalmadi also said that the OC was exploring various alternatives to raise the money. “We are looking at four options - sponsorship, television revenues, merchandise, and ticket sales — to raise the requisite amount,” Kalmadi explained.

Having targeted Rs 200 crore in television revenues, Kalmadi said that the budget had already crossed more than Rs 300 crore.

This was due to the interest shown by British and Australian networks, as “the timing of swimming and some other sports was perfect for their athletes,” Kalmadi said.

Hero Honda motorcycles will escort the Baton when it arrives in India from the Wagah border in Pakistan. It will travel almost 20,000 kms and through all the states and their capitals on its 100-day journey.

Pawan Munjal, MD and CEO, said, “Along with the Games, Hero Honda will also be sponsoring the third edition of the Indian Premier League, FIH Hockey World Cup and Indian Open golf.”

Toronto to host Bollywood's global awards in 2011

The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards will be held in Toronto from June 16-19, 2011.
Bollywood actors Vivek Oberoi and Celina Jaitely, in the presence of Ontario's Premier Dalton McGuinty, made the announcement here.

"To win this privilege to host the 2011 IIFA awards...you need to know that Bollywood is in Ontario, especially Toronto. I was telling our stars here that Toronto city is the city of five billion people; 52 percent or half of the people living here were born outside the country. And a big component of that comes from the Asian community, particularly from India. So this is going to be exciting," said McGuinty.

A joint release by IIFA and the Ontario government said that the awards should attract about 40,000 visitors to the city and another 350 million viewers to television screens the world over.

South Asians make up the largest visible minority in Toronto, with about 300,000, 12 per cent of the entire city's population.
Celina Jaitley told reporters that Canada is a big base for Bollywood as there is huge fan following there.
"Well, Canada is big base for tour film industry. And I am sure we are very excited to go there. And this IIFA will be really big because a large number of our fans are from Canada. So we are really looking forward to this," said Jaitley.

IIFA ceremonies have been previously hosted by Dubai, Amsterdam, Johannesburg and Bangkok. (ANI)

UP too huge to handle: Mayawati

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday declared her outright preference for further partition of UP and creation of independent states of Bundelkhand and Harit Pradesh.

"I have written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, urging him to give clearance for carving out independent states of Bundelkhand and Harit Pradesh out of a giant sized and unmanageable Uttar Pradesh," Mayawati told a press conference in Lucknow on Friday evening.

"Since the centre has already given its nod for carving out the state of Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh, there was good enough reason to follow the same exercise in case of UP, where the demand for an independent Bundelkhand in southern UP and a Harit Pradesh in western UP was being raised for a long time," she said.
While political observers felt that the move was aimed at creating greater discomfort for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre already grappling with the gradually increasing demand for statehood from different corners of the country, Mayawati sought to justify her demand by impressing that she had had these views for long.

"I was always in favour of smaller states as they are much simpler to govern," she said. "These views have been expressed by me on several occasions in the past as well.

"In the past too, on March 15, 2008, I had sent a letter to the prime minister, urging him to consider the demand of the people of Bundelkhand and of western UP for giving them independent statehood."
She said, "Still earlier on October 8, 2007, I had expressed these view at a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) rally in Lucknow."

According to her: "My party legislators too had formally raised this demand on the floor of the state assembly on October 31, 2007... therefore, it was now time for the centre to act."

Asked if she would move a resolution in this regard in the state assembly, Mayawati shot back: "Well, I would do so once the centre has given its approval in principle."

Meanwhile, in an appeal to the people of these two regions, she has urged them "not to indulge in any activity that is likely to disturb law and order in the state." She, however, assured to "extend full support to the popular demand of the people".

Industry not bothered who gets Hyderabad

Will the city of Hyderabad become the capital of the proposed state of Telangana or get the status of union territory? The business community and industry are not bothered.

But business and industry leaders are concerned over the shutdowns and violence in Hyderabad and other parts of the Telangana region as well as the coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions.

The industry in general is indifferent to what happens to Hyderabad in the event of a division of the state, saying their only concern is peace, political stability and good infrastructure.

Hyderabad, a hub of IT, biotechnology and pharma, is at the centre of a tussle between Telangana and Andhra regions.

The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and others have already made it clear that Telangana state without Hyderabad is unacceptable as the city had been the capital of the region for 400 long years.

Those opposing a division of the state want union territory status for Hyderabad in the event of formation of Telangana.

The reasons are obvious. Industrialists from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions have made huge investments in Hyderabad ever since Telangana was merged with then Andhra State (which had Kurnool as the capital) in 1956 to form Andhra Pradesh.

"There is a concern over the developments of the last few days. There is apprehension of violence affecting business and industry," Harish Chandra Prasad, chairman of the Confederation of Industry (CII), Andhra Pradesh, told IANS.

He said this fear was not only among businessmen and industrialists from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions but also among those from other states and even among multinational companies.

"We would not like to comment on politics but we want the issue to be settled at the earliest. If it is settled quickly, then the impact on business and investment will be negligible. But if it prolongs for one or two years, it will have an adverse impact," said Prasad.

Hyderabad, which witnessed unprecedented growth over the last decade, is home to over 1,000 IT firms including national and multinational giants like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Mahindra Satyam, Microsoft and Google.

Geographically located in the heart of the Telanagna region, this four-century-old city was the capital of the princely state of Hyderabad ruled by the Asaf Jahis (Nizams).

A fine blend of tradition and modernity, the landscape of this city of minarets transformed in recent years with gleaming business houses, hotels and shopping malls. Hyderabad has a population of about eight million, nearly 35 percent of them Muslims.

There are others who feel that it does not matter whether Hyderabad is included in Telangana state or Andhra state or given the status of a union territory.

"As far as industry is concerned, it really doesn't matter as long as there are no law and order problems. The industry only wants peaceful atmosphere, a stable government, manpower and good infrastructure," said J.A. Chowdary, president of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) and a former president of Hyderabad Software Exporters Association (HYSEA).

"As long as our primary conditions are met, it makes no difference who is in power or which state we are in. There should be no shutdowns and disturbances. During the last 10 days the industry lost productivity," he said.

Chowdary was also of the opinion that industrialists and businessmen from other regions had nothing to worry about even if a separate state was carved out and Hyderabad becomes its capital.

"Several small states were carved out of bigger states in recent years but there were no incidents of local people driving out non-locals. Every state wants investment. The chief minister of Telangana will not want to see Hyderabad as a ghost city. Everyone wants more job opportunities," he said.

"An investor goes to a state or city where he or she gets good appreciation for investment. He wants good returns wherever he goes," said Chowdary, who is also the chairman of NVIDIA Graphics India.

New math: 37% Indians live below poverty line

Every third Indian is living below poverty line, says an expert group, putting the incidence of poverty in india at a high 37 % of
population, 10 percentage points more than estimated earlier.

Among the states, Orissa and Bihar are at the bottom, while Nagaland, Delhi and J&K have the least number of poor, says a report by the expert group headed by Suresh Tendulkar, former chairman of PM’s Economic Advisory Council.

As much as 41.8 per cent of the rural population survives on a monthly per-capita consumption expenditure of Rs 447, spending only so much on bare necessities such as food, fuel, light, clothing and footwear.

Among urban population, 25.7 per cent are poor, who spend only Rs 578.8 on essential needs. The group submitted the report earlier this week.

The expert group was set up following criticism of the existing official estimates of poverty released by the Planning Commission in 2007. According to the panel’s recent estimates, poverty in India came down from 35.97 per cent in 1993-94 to 27.54 per cent in 2004-05.

Although the Tendulkar report has estimated incidence of poverty at 37.2 per cent against the commission’s estimate of 27.5 per cent, it did say the estimates are “not comparable” as the former is based on a new basket of goods.

In a written reply to a query in the Rajya Sabha, minister of state for planning V Narayansamy said almost half of Orissa’s population is poor with 46.37 per cent of the people living below poverty line. On the other hand, insurgency-hit J&K is the richest where only five out of every 100 are officially poor.

The assessments, based on daily calorie intake, found that people in Orissa were most deprived followed by Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, with the below poverty line population hovering over 40 per cent in each of these states.
